How It Works
Ascellus helps you confidently address behavioral and mental health needs for work comp claims.
Behavioral health factors shouldn’t be the unknown variable in your claim strategy, especially when it can make such a difference for the person at the center of the claim. At Ascellus, we bring clarity, structure, and results to a piece of workers’ comp that can often feel uncertain.

Here’s what it looks like when you partner with us, whether you’re submitting a straightforward referral or navigating a more complex situation.
How We Do It

Step 1: You Identify a Need
You have a recovering worker with potential behavioral health concerns.
That may include:
-
Delayed recovery due to chronic pain with emotional distress.
-
Ongoing work-related psychosocial stress
-
History of head injury or report of brain fog or postconcussional symptoms
-
An upcoming surgery that requires a psychological evaluation or health psychology services
-
Need for psychiatric medication evaluation

Step 2: You Submit a Referral
Once a referral arrives via fax or email, our team immediately begins to process it and provides feedback about scheduling status.

Step 3: We Coordinate Care
After review:
-
We identify the right clinician based on jurisdiction, availability, and clinical need
-
We contact the recovering worker and schedule the assessment
-
We coordinate with you and the rest of the recovering worker’s claims care team throughout the process
Ascellus understands the state jurisdictional differences and how they apply to us, and our team can help you navigate them too.

Step 4: We Conduct an Initial Assessment
We don’t jump straight into treatment. Cases begin with an appropriate assessment based on the mechanism of injury and reason for referral.
Upon completion of the assessment, you'll receive a straightforward evaluation report that contains treatment recommendations based on medical necessity.

Step 5: We Take Care of Treatment + Reporting
Treatment is structured and outcome-driven, with a focus on return to function and work. We typically use Work-Focused CBT and other evidence-based interventions. One of the services that sets us apart is our clinical reports. You’ll receive timely, actionable reports that are designed to support effective claims management.
Expect:
-
Clear insight into progress and barriers
-
Clinical reports to inform claims decisions
-
When appropriate Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI) opinions and impairment ratings
-
Work status based on psychological safety, workplace functioning, and clinical evidence

Step 6: We Provide a Discharge Report at Case Close
At the conclusion of Ascellus services, we provide a final report and required documentation. We provide the information you need to move forward with clarity and confidence.
